Life can change unexpectedly through illness, hospitalisation, moving into a care home, or other unforeseen circumstances. While many owners think about what would happen to their cats after their death, it is equally important to consider situations where you may be temporarily or permanently unable to care for them yourself.
The Siamese Cat Welfare Trust (SCWT) is here to help ensure that your Siamese cat’s future is secure, whatever life may bring. Our priority has always been, and always will be, the welfare of the cats entrusted to our care.
Planning Ahead
To help protect your cat’s future and ensure your wishes can be carried out promptly, we recommend that you:
- Ask your solicitor or will writer to include a clause stating that you would like the Siamese Cat Welfare Trust to take responsibility for your cat, or cats, should you become unable to care for them.
- Notify the Trust in writing of your intentions.
- Inform close relatives, friends or executors of your wishes.
- Leave a clearly visible note in your home, such as on the fridge, by the front door, or in another obvious location, explaining your wishes and providing the Trust’s contact details.
This last point is particularly important. In many situations, carers, neighbours, emergency responders or family members may need to make immediate arrangements for your cats long before a will is located and read. A clearly visible note can ensure that help reaches your cats without delay.
How SCWT Can Help
Should the need arise, the Siamese Cat Welfare Trust can:
- Take over the immediate care of your cat or cats.
- Arrange appropriate foster care while longer-term plans are made.
- Carefully assess and match your cat with a suitable new home.
- Continue to support adopters with veterinary assistance where appropriate.
- Ensure that cats with ongoing medical or welfare needs receive the care they require.
In some cases, a cat’s age, health, temperament or individual circumstances may make rehoming unsuitable. Where this occurs, they will continue to receive loving care within our network of experienced foster carers and permanent foster homes, ensuring their welfare remains protected throughout their lives.
About Leaving a Bequest
The care of your cat is never dependent upon leaving a donation or bequest to the Trust. Your cat’s welfare will always come first, before any other consideration.
However, if you are able to leave a gift in your will, it would be deeply appreciated.
A bequest can help towards:
- The future care and welfare of your own cat or cats.
- Veterinary treatment, including vaccinations, dental treatment, investigations and ongoing medical care.
- Foster care and rehoming costs.
- Supporting cats who may require long-term or specialist care.
- Helping other Siamese cats who come into the Trust in similar circumstances.
Many people find comfort in knowing that any gift they leave will not only help their own beloved cats but will also help secure the future of Siamese rescue for generations to come. Bequests play an important role in allowing the Trust to continue its welfare work and respond whenever a Siamese cat needs our help.
If You Have Already Made Your Own Arrangements
If you have already made alternative arrangements for your cats, our Welfare Officers are always available to offer advice, support and guidance should circumstances change in the future.
